India’s Failed Diplomatic Efforts to Isolate Pakistan

By M. Tahir Khan.

The Uri attack in Indian Occupied Kashmir and afterwards diplomatic efforts from Indian government apparatus have not yet achieved the desired and expected outcome. India tried to convince the world that Pakistan is a terrorist state and all the way behind the Uri attack, Pakistan should be isolated, but India’s hopes are dying at the moment and is looking a way out from the crisis created by none other than India’s own Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Today we have seen one other effort from Indian Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj, in her UNGA speech she highlighted the same narrative and pointed out to indentify and isolate nations that export terrorism and also urged Pakistan to abandon Kashmir dream. But, the post Uri attack scenarios suggest that attack was not only a cover up from the Kashmir situation, but also a false flag operation carried out to bring Pakistan into limelight as a state responsible for exporting cross border terrorism.

India was under much pressure and criticism from the western world and human rights organizations for violating humanity in Kashmir valley after the incident of Burhan Wani’s martyrdom. Since then, Kashmir Freedom Movement got a new life and concerns and tensions of Indian government were growing rapidly. To suppress the Kashmir Freedom Movement and to bring Pakistan towards defensive track, it was realized that a new narrative must be given to the world leaders to shift their concerns from Kashmir, but that was not a simple task. The Uri incident occurred at a time when Pakistan’s Prime Minister was on his way to United Nations General Assembly Session to raise the concerns of Kashmiri people in front of UN and world suddenly had to witness an attack on Indian military base in Kashmir that left 18 Indian soldiers dead and 4 attackers were also killed.

After the Uri incident, Indian government, its vibrant electronic hype-creating media, military high ups, including Indian Director General Military Operations Ranbir Singh blamed Pakistan immediately without even prior investigations. The task was to convince the world about Pakistan being as a terrorist state, was not that much easy as it was expected. India was able to suppress the Kashmir crisis for the time being as it was Uri Attack that over shadowed the Indian brutality. Indian external affairs, defense and home ministries got into action to raise the false flag operation as a tool to isolate Pakistan diplomatically.

Indians believed that it was not that difficult to move diplomatically against Pakistan, but Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister of Pakistan landed in New York with the mind to build the case for Kashmir cause and to highlight the brutality of Indian Armed Forces against the unarmed civilian population. The task was clear; Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif with his diplomatic team, including Chief Diplomat Sartaj Aziz, Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry and Pakistan’s Permanent Representative at United Nations Dr. Maleeha Lodhi took the lead position in setting the agenda for Kashmir cause and arranged all important meetings for PM to meet with other important head of states. These sideline- meetings with Chinese PM,  British PM, Turkish President, Iranian President and other important head of states proved fruitful in bringing Pakistan’s narrative in forefront and  later on PM’s speech in UN General Assembly highlighted all the Pakistan’s efforts for Kashmir movement.

We have seen positive outcomes from Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts, whereas Indian diplomatic efforts to isolate Pakistan were not as successful as they had planned, therefore, India had to initiate the ideas of limited war or surgical strikes within Pakistan and ultimately brought both the countries on the brink of war. The diplomatic efforts of Pakistan were recognized from all around the world. Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) contact group on Jammu and Kashmir, held a special meeting at New York where Turkey and Azerbaijan extended full support to Pakistan’s cause and called for cessation of violence in Kashmir, whereas false flag operation remained absent from the agenda of OIC on which Indian print and electronic media created noise but that proved to be of no use. Foreign Ministers of Turkey and Azerbaijan expressed serious concerns at the human rights violations in Occupied Kashmir and emphasized for the early resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.  Moreover, Secretary General OIC Iyad Ameen Madni met UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon on this Saturday and in a press release, it was pointed out that Secretary General OIC has highlighted the issue of Kashmir especially with current ongoing developments.

After the Uri attack the Indian government tried to convince the world that Pakistan is a terrorist state, enhanced its efforts to get Pakistan isolated from the world, but could not succeed. Indian external affairs ministry also lobbied with their Russian counterparts to suspend first ever joint military exercise between Pakistan and Russia, but failed here as well and Russian troops arrived for the first ever military exercise, opening new doors of Pak-Russia friendship. Josh Earnest, Spokesperson While House, while answering a question, called for diplomatic solutions of Indo-Pak tensions. India was expecting Indian favoured statement from White House Spokesperson but it did not happen and the statement from US gave another jolt to India. India failed here again and then had kick started its plans to impose war on Pakistan.

India’s daily English paper Indian Express exposed the drama of Uri attack to some extent. They negated the statement of DGMO that weapons recovered from terrorists with Pakistani marks was not correct and GPS system provided for forensics was already damaged, means nothing concrete can be taken into account. The Indian media also raised some important questions on the evidences provided by government, the identity of four attackers also became a mystery and dead bodies of attackers were not even shown to the local or international media as well.

In the last week, the world has observed different perspective coming out of India one after one; initially it was aimed to declare Pakistan a terrorist state. Afterwards when India could not be able to get positive diplomatic results for its efforts to force Pakistan into isolation, we have seen Indian attempts to force a war on Pakistan through their media and by the re-enforcement of their forces along with Line of Control (LOC). These efforts to wage war on Pakistan brought Indian Armed Forces under further limelight, this time international magazine “The Economist” highlighted the weaknesses of Indian forces, their internal rifts and technical flaws in their War equipment. Whereas, India has received a strong response from Pakistan’s side that if the country was forced into any kind of war it will be responded in the same way. India shifted its narrative once again and this time Indian Prime Minister who was once getting desperate to engage in war with Pakistan and to isolate the nation internationally, now in clear words avoided the war with Pakistan. He instead referred to initiate a war to end poverty in both the countries.

Finally, India tried to cover up Kashmir issue by diverting the international attention from its Armed Forces’ brutality against unarmed people of Kashmir, but the struggle for Kashmir will not end, both by Kashmiri and Pakistani people. It has already been shifted in the hands of fifth generation of Kashmiris and it will remain continued. Pakistan will keep highlighting it by supporting the cause morally and diplomatically at all forums as well.
