Atleast 61 security personnel have been martyred and 117 got injured in a terrorist-attack on Police Training College located on Sariyab Road near Quetta last night. About 4 terrorists entered the hostel of training centre and opened fire on the recently passed out police recruits.
Immediately after the attack, heavy contingents of Pakistan Army, Frontier Corps and Police reached the spot, cordoned off the area and surrounded the vicinity. Security Forces and Law Enforcement Agencies readily started the Operation Clean-up and after 4 hours, Police Training Centre got cleared. Those who were injured immediately shifted to Civil Hospital Quetta and the Combined Military Hospital (CMH).
Talking to media, Baluchistan Home Minister Sarfraz Bugti said that three militants had targeted the guard of the hostel so that they could enter in premises with ease. “The militants targeted the sentry stationed at the watch tower. He fought bravely against the militants but embraced martyrdom,” Sarfraz Bugti said.
As per sources, at the time of the attack, about 700 cadets were present inside the Police Training Centre. Two suicide bombers blew themselves up within the training centre whereas one of the terrorists who was also wearing a suicide jacket was killed before he could detonate his explosives. In this entire scenario, 61 security personnel including a Captain of Pakistan Army embraced martyrdom while ensuring the safety of recruits.
IG FC Baluchistan Major General Sher Afgan told the media that initial investigations reveal that the terrorists were constantly getting the instructions from Afghanistan and belonged to outlawed Lashkar-e-Jhangvi Al Almi militant group.
Chief Minister Baluchistan Rana Sanaullah Zehri claimed that there were intelligence reports of an attack and security had been on high alert. Due to high security across the provisional capital, terrorists opted to launch a coward attack on Police Training Centre that was located in a suburban area, 13 km away from the city. He further said that Pakistan Army and Police worked together and security forces fought with bravery. Those who got martyrdom are our true heroes, he added.
Army Chief General Raheel Sharif also arrived in Quetta earlier this morning along with DG ISI Lieutenant General Rizwan Akhtar and DG Military Intelligence Major General Nadeem Zaki Manj. General Raheel Sharif visited the site of tragedy, met with Police, Army & FC Personnel who participated in the operation, appreciated their bravery and said it was through their efforts that more lives were not lost.
Later then, the Army Chief, CM Baluchistan and other officials offered funeral prayers for some of the security personnel along with the Pakistan Army’s Captain who embraced martyrdom during the operation. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Federal Interior Minister Ch. Nisar Ahmad were also there at the occasion.
Following the attack, PM Nawaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting in Governor House to review the law and order situation in the region. COAS General Raheel Sharif, Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan and other officials were also there in a high-level meeting.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif upon arriving in Quetta earlier visited the Civil Hospital along with COAS General Raheel Sharif to meet the injured ones of the attack. PM was being accompanied by Ch. Nisar Ali Khan, Sanaullah Zehri and other officials as well.
While talking to media, Interior Minister expressed his grief for the loss of precious young lives. He said that it is sad moment for whole nation and people are now sick of picking up the bodies of their beloved ones. He further said that there is no doubt that the law and order situation in the country has improved but one such incident wipes out all the hard efforts to maintain peace. Relevant institutions and security forces will be equally asked for lack of sharing of intelligence information to counter such attacks, he added.
As per ISPR, Gallantry Awards have been announced for a Pakistan Army Captain who was martyred and for a Naib Subedar who was injured during the operation which was carried out after terrorists stormed the Police Training College in Quetta.
Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif has announced “Tamgha-e-Jurrat” for Capitan Roohullah who lost his life was and Tamgha-e-Basalat for Naib Subedar Muhammad Ali who got injured while countering the terrorists. Both of the heroes executed one suicide bomber and cornered the other one that actually helped police recruits in escaping until the terrorist exploded causing the damage to some extent.
After this sad incident, United States State Department Spokesman John Kirby said that the country stands with Pakistan in this difficult hour and will continue to work for tackling terrorism. He extended his condolences to the effected families who lost their young bloods in the terrorist attack.
UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson also condemned the attack. In a statement, he said that his thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones and friends, or injured in this callous attack. He further said that those seeking to undermine Pakistan’s security will not prevail, and UK will continue supporting those people who are determined to build a brighter and peaceful future.
President Mamnoon Hussain, Chairman PTI Imran Khan, Opposition Leader Khursheed Shah, CM Baluchistan Rana Sanaullah Zehri, CM Punjab Shahbaz Sharif, CM Sindh Murad Ali Shah, Ex President Pervez Musharraf, Chairman PAT Dr. Tahir-ul-Qadri have strongly condemned the incident and prayed for prosperity and peace in the country. Civil Society has also carried out rallies to show solidarity with the lost lives.
