Curing Breast Cancer

Dr. Saba Akram

Pakistan still remains one of the countries of the world with a very high incidence of breast cancer. Whoaa I didn’t know that until I attended this awesome I will Stay Beautiful workshop and did a little research of my own.

80% of the people coming to the cancer hospitals are females with breast cancer. The females are belong to the age groups of 15 to 50.

BREAST CANCER IS CURABLE:

Cancer is a very scary word. All types of cancer are curable when detected at early stage. Some at later stages too. The diagnosis is a traumatic experience for patients and their families. The difficult process of surgery followed by chemotherapy can completely shatter hopes of patients.  Almost everyone knows someone who got very sick or died from cancer. Cancer has been the forbidden word for so long, its high time we realize that it’s here. It exists and continues to break the spirits of so many around us.  IWSB is the channel that allows these people to come together and support each other during this journey and equips them with the tools to integrate back into the society and live their lives as normal as possible.” These are the views of the members of I Will Stay Beautiful (IWSB).

I WILL STAY BEAUTIFUL (IWSB) – A CAUSE, A HOPE, A MISSION

I Will Stay Beautiful (IWSB) is a cancer support group, the first of its kind in Pakistan. This group was founded in November 2014 at the Aga Khan Hospital, by Dr.Mehwish Mussarat, Dr.Adnan Jabbar and Dr.Hira Amjad.

IWSB was started in memory of  Dr Mehwish’s mother who passed away from breast cancer in 2008. Her name was Yasmeen which mean jasmine flowers and her memory will forever flourish with this group in the form of the jasmine flower used in the IWSB logo.

STEPS TO CURE BREAST CANCER

Attending the IWSB platform highlighted that all women battling breast cancer need support during the prognosis, treatment and after the post treatment. The atmosphere of the session was so lively with doctors and experts.

STEP 1:  SELF BREAST EXAM (given at the end of the article)

  • Early detection leads to 100% cure

STEP 2: GET YOURSELF CHECKED BY THE PHYSICIAN ONCE A YEAR

STEP 3: MAMMOGRAM ONCE A YEAR IF OVER 40

  • (Guidelines differ in case of certain conditions)

STEP 4: ADD EACH OF THESE TO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE TO REDUCE YOUR RISK TO CANCER

  • Research has proven that a good healthy diet with fruits and vegetables
  • Avoid processed foods
  • Incorporate 40 to 45 minutes of exercise in your daily routine.

REMEMBER

If you feel anything different with your body, any usual lumps or bumps, bring it to the attention of your physician. Don’t be afraid, Don’t hesitate.

The participants are treated as a part of one big family and have lots of fun together.

One of the patient shared that they have celebrated mother’s day, valentine’s day, eid holidays together and at the annual cancer survivor day at the hospital, the women participated in the walk of life. They walked on ramps with their families declaring to the world, that they will stay beautiful after fighting cancer and will become a hope role model for all those suffering.

This is such an encouraging platform for women battling the disease to come together and discuss the mental and physical dilemmas they face as they fight Cancer. With the help of experts they are guided and counselled. The IWSB meetings highlight the different avenues of the disease and treatment. Sessions have been held on side effects of chemotherapy, nutrition, psychological problems to name a few. This is organization is a fresh breath of air, most needed today where people don’t have time to talk to one another. Let alone discuss diseases.

An informative article on an important topic. There is definitely need to spread awareness about self-examination and early diagnosis of breat lumps and how this can significantly impact lives. Our government should introduce low-cost, if not free, mammography programs for women over 40. JazakAllah for bringing up this issue.
