Supreme Court reserves its Verdict in Panama Leaks Case

After around 4 months, hearing of Panama Leaks Case in Supreme Court of Pakistan has finally ended when today five-member bench of the Apex Court reserved its verdict in the high profile case against the family members of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The bench comprises of Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, Justice Azmat Saeed, Justice Ijaz Afzal, Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Ijaz-ul-Hasan.

The bench reserved its verdict of the case after when Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Counsel Naeem Bukhari and Awami Muslim League’s (AML) Chief Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad concluded their arguments in the court today. The judges remarked that the Apex Court will not issue a short notice but a detailed document at an appropriate time.

Earlier, when Naeem Bukhari started his arguments before the bench, Justice Azmat Saeed Sheikh asked him not to repeat his previous arguments again when Bukhari raised his point about arrears of Gulf Steel Mills. The counsel in his arguments before the bench cited the decision given by the court in the case of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani to which the court remarked that the decision had been taken in response to a Contempt of Court petition against the Gillani.

Giving remarks on the documents submitted by both sides, Justice Ijaz Afzal remarked that both sides had submitted documents which could not be verified through authentic sources. Referring the documents bearing the signature of Maryam Nawaz, the judge remarked that the papers were termed fake by Maryam Nawaz whereas PTI claims that they were genuine. Can these documents be considered as evidence? The court has always taken decisions keeping in mind the uncontroversial acts, Justice Ijaz Afzal remarked.

Summing up his arguments, PTI Counsel Naeem Bukhari said that the Qatari Prince had not been mentioned before in the speeches of PM Nawaz Sharif. He said that since 1980 to 2004, the Qatari prince was acting as a bank. The Qatari Prince has said that he has paid the liability, but how was such a huge amount transferred without a bank? Naeem Bukhari asked.

Maryam Nawaz has been signaled to be Nawaz Sharif’s political successor whereas records were shown of PM’s sons Hussain Nawaz and Hassan Nawaz that they owned London Real Estate through Offshore Companies. The Panama Papers have whipped up a storm of controversy over offshore wealth, catching political leaders, sports personalities and underworld members across the globe in the scandal.
