At least two people have lost their lives whereas ten got injured when Karachi-bound Passenger Train Shalimar Express collided with an Oil Tanker late at Monday night in Sheikhupura. Leading to a massive explosion soon after the collision, the engine and five bogies of the train, including the luggage compartment and a power plant caught fire.
Train Driver and Assistant driver died in result of the mishap and the deceased have been identified as Abdul Latif and Abdul Hameed. DCO Tariq Akram said that the Oil Tanker’s Brakes failed a few moments before the train collided with it whereas contrary to the DCO’s statements, DSP Khalid Gujjar told that the accident occurred as the Railway Crossing’s barrier was left opened.
To save their lives, passengers of the ill-fated train broke the window panes of the train to jump outside. Rescue services were immediately dispatched to the site of the accident whereas the injured passengers were shifted to DHQ Hospital. The driver of the Oil Tanker and Local Railway Officials were immediately arrested.
Oil Tanker’s Driver was in Hurry, says Khawaja Saad Rafique
Federal Railway Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique has expressed regret over the incident and He and said that the incident occurred as Axle of the Oil Tanker malfunctioned whereas Oil Tanker’s driver was also in hurry. He told that an engine and three bogies have been damaged in the collision with further stating that they have dispatched a Relief Train from Lahore. He ensured action to be taken against Railway Staff if negligence found by them.
