Audi recently joined the electric SUV trend and announced its own brand new vehicle which will be called the E-Tron. Prices for the first models will range from $75,000-86,700 and the car will be available in Europe by the end of this year. The new Audi has a 95-kWh battery and promises over 200 miles of range.
After Tesla launched their Model X in 2015, they’ve taken over the electric SUV market as no other major car company offered any options in that department. In 2018, however, four major car companies have now released an electric SUV concept of their own, spicing up competition in a market dominated by Tesla.
A few days ago Mercedes-Benz revealed the EQC, their electric SUV. According to them, their new machine will be able to do 0-100 Km/h in under 5 seconds, which is a big achievement for an SUV. The EQC will produce over 400 horsepower and will come with an 80-kWh battery. Jaguar recently revealed their I-Pace, another electric SUV, which they claim, quite ambitiously, will do 0-100 Km/h in under 2 seconds. That’s hypercar territory. BMW has also announced their electric SUV, which will be known as the BMW Vision iNext.
These three, for now, are concepts and the companies will not be able to put them out till 2020. Audi, on the other hand, was the last out of the four to reveal their electric SUV but are putting it into production before the rest. They are already taking bookings from people, starting at $1000.
As for now, it seems like Audi is the only threat to the Tesla dominated electric SUV market. However, with all the other mega car companies like Mercedes-Benz and BMW slowly revealing their intentions with their ambitious futuristic concepts, it seems that Tesla’s electric car monopoly might not last for as long as they might have imagined.
