Sacred Games may not return for second season

Entertainment Desk

India’s first original Netflix series, Sacred Games, may just succumb to the #MeToo movement following allegations against writer Varun Grover. It is being speculated that the show, which stars Saif Ali Khan, Radhika Apte, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in pivotal roles, may not return for a second season due to the allegations against Grover.

In response Netflix, the platform on which the show is aired, said in a statement, “At this time, we are evaluating options on the path forward.”

Times Now News reports that the other option that is being considered is to continue with the show but to change the writer.

Sacred Games has proved very successful not only in India but also abroad, receiving near-universal critical acclaim. It was only a month ago that Netflix had confirmed that Sacred Games would continue for a second season.

However it seems that, despite the official announcement in September, and the critical and commercial success of the show, its fate hangs in the balance.

Grover has flatly denied all allegations against him, labelling the claims “untrue, misleading, and defamatory”.

He later issued a detailed official statement on his Twitter account, addressing every detail of the accusations against him and promising complete cooperation in any investigation against him.

Some of Grover’s Twitter supporters have come out in support of the writer, who has given us successful projects like Masaan, which released in 2015.

Others have pointed out the double standards in Grover’s statements.

Now that Grover has come out with his side of the story, it will be interesting to see what Netflix decides to do. Given the fact that Sacred Games was a massive hit among audiences, it would a great loss to fans – and to the other people associated with the project – if it were to be discontinued.
