The new version of the Toyota Corolla, the best-selling car in Pakistan and one of the best-selling in the world, has been unveiled featuring a complete redesign. This is the 12th generation of the Corolla and promises ‘more horsepower and better fuel efficiency,’ according to the Japanese automaker.
The 2020 model features several details that can be traced back to the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback introduced last year. It has the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, general interior design and a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.
Toyota has also announced that for the first time ever there will be a Corolla Hybrid.
It’s worth noting that the 12th generation Corolla in Pakistan will likely vary from the global model as we have seen in the past. The Pakistani version generally has fewer features and is essentially a stripped down version of the global model.
Let’s take a look at the car’s features including the exterior and interior.
The 2020 Corolla can be considered sharper and sleeker compared to the other sedans with the L, LE and XLE Corollas featuring a conservative bodywork. The sportier versions SE and XSE will possess a more aggressive look.
The car has the same wheelbase as the previous generation. There are some small adjustments; the front overhang has been shortened whereas the rear one has been extended slightly. The car’s height has also been lowered along with the car’s hood.
The 2020 Corolla introduces adaptive front lighting, which will steer the beam around the corners as the wheel is turned depending on the speed of the car. This is feature seen in more luxury cars such as BMWs and Mercedes. At the back, LED lamps are standard and design will vary according to the trim.
The LE trim will feature 16-inch steel wheels whereas the XLE will have 16-inch alloy rims. The sportier SE and XSE trims will come with 18-inch wheels.
The 2020 Corolla has a traditional cabin but it will now be equipped with much more tech. The L-grade will come with a 7-inch infotainment system whereas all other trims get an 8-inch version ‘with Entune 3.0 infotainment supporting Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa, though not Android Auto.’
Ambient lighting along with Qi charging is optional, however, this will likely not be introduced in Pakistan.
Toyota has aimed to provide better safety in the new car. Here are a few things which are going to be introduced:
- 8 standard airbags
- A version of active cruise control
- Pre-collision break assistance
- Automatic high beams
- Lane departure alerts with steering assistance
- Lane tracing assistance, which helps to keep the vehicle in the center of the lane
- Collision-avoidance braking to avoid bikers, vehicles and pedestrians
The 2020 Corolla sedan L, LE and XLE will be equipped with the same 1.8-liter four-cylinder petrol engine as before. However, the company is promising better power and fuel economy. It is not clear which models will be available in Pakistan.
The new 2.0-liter Dynamic-Force inline four-cylinder engine, with 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft. of torque will only come with XSE and SE variants.
The vehicle will be available in both a CVT and a six-speed manual transmission.
