Rawalpindi: Pakistan International Airlines cancels all protocols and special arrangements for government and
PIA’s president, Air Marshal Arshad Malik, directed PIA to follow the regular procedure.
The president and chief executive officer of the national airline will also not able to enjoy any protocol or special arrangements.
PIA management ended the special treatment being provided to pilots and cabin crew. They also launched an austerity campaign and withdrew the facilitating staff leaving the crew members to handle their luggage on their own.
The staff has been redeployed to their normal duties and the cabin crew rooms have also been demolished.
PIA’s management claimed that this move was a part of austerity steps and was done to improve services.
Previously PIA was providing loaders to the crew at the time of boarding for carrying their luggage. The loaders were
PIA’s spokesman said the loaders have been redeployed for facilitating passengers with special needs. The staff will facilitate passengers using wheelchairs during arrival and departure.
This past week, PIA also directed its staff to lose weight in accordance to desired standards. This statement was considered controversial and the airline was criticized on social media for taking this step.
Cabin crew members expressed frustration at the new directive, saying that they will challenge it in theSupreme Court if the airline refuses to retract the policy.
PIA seems to be taking these measures due to the rising competition from new airlines like ‘Serene Air’ and ‘Indus Airlines’. They need to improve their services to win the confidence of their customers and compete with the private sector airlines. If they do not take any measures like these and do not improve their customer service, people will start preferring other airlines with better facilities and services.
