“Dam Fund was not meant to make dam”: former CJ Saqib Nisar

Addressing an audience at the Lahore Literary Festival (LLF), former chief Justice Saqib Nisar said that the Dam Fund was not meant to build the dams but to create awareness about the issue.

The former CJ had been invited on a panel do discuss the problem of water scarcity in Pakistan. Commenting on the matter of dams, Mr. Nisar said he was prepared to take any criticism on the matter for his country.

Mr. Nisar had been questioned on judicial overreach and how he had overextended his powers in making the dam fund as well as popularizing himself.

“Whether the direction issued for the making of this dam is a bad action on part of SC and myself, or it’s a good action for the people of Pakistan in the future.”

Responding to the question the former chief justice said: “We never thought this money would be sufficient to complete the project.”

“We wanted to create awareness and make people understand how important it is. If through this donation we are able to generate another Rs15 billion then that is an achievement. This money was never intended to be used 100% for building.”

Of course, the latest statement from the former chief justice has caused widespread criticism. Many of his critics have remarked that Mr. Nisar had spent his time as chief justice garnering media attention and gaining a cult following. Critics had said there was no way the dam could be funded through this fund and their criticism seems to have been confirmed.
