Prime Minister Imran Khan paid just Rs. 103,763 in the tax year 2017, according to the parliamentary tax directory issued by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
Among other notable personalities, former PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi had paid Rs, 3.086 million in taxes in 2017 while PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif paid Rs. 10.29 million tax, and his son Hamza Sharif paid Rs. 8.26 million in 2017.
Interestingly, the FBR has reissued the tax directory from 2017 which had already been issued by the previous government last year. The statistics for this year are as yet unavailable even though the FBR has collected those taxes.
The low amount of tax paid by PM Imran Khan has caused caused much criticism of the PM who had held a ceremony for the highest taxpayers in Pakistan just a couple of days ago. At the even, PM Khan had severely criticized opposition leaders and accused them of evading taxes and being unable to justify their lifestyles in relation to the taxes paid.
However, the data reveals that the PM has paid a very low sum as tax, while many opposition leaders have paid millions in taxes. Of course this has resulted in plenty of comments on social media.
